LE CANNET
Just a few minutes from La Croisette beaches you can discover the rich heritage of our town - our local heritage, festivals and traditions.

The walk begins at the Hôtel de Ville - Salle Bellini, a former hotel ("Hôtel des Anges"). On the left you can see Eglise Sainte Philomène.But first let’s cross the Boulevard Sadi-Carnot to get to the Jardins du Tivoli, via rue Cavasse. As you wish, you can go either:
- left to the Espace Bonnard, where there are numerous high quality exhibitions and then join rue de Cannes where you can explore the Tour des Danys.
- or right to the Eglise Sainte-Catherine, a real gem, that has been listed as a historic monument since 1926. Just next to this church don’t miss Chapelle Saint-Bernardin, where travelling exhibitions are held.
Retracing your steps, cross boulevard Carnot once again before going into the Vieux Cannet the historic city center, centring on rue Saint-Sauveur and Place Bellevue.
To finish your walk, take the chemin de la Chapelle Notre Dame des Anges to the Grande-Bretagne roundabout and catch a bus that will take you directly to the sea front and the beaches. You can end your tour with a meal in Vieux Cannet in the green setting of Place Bellevue where any of the many restaurants will be delighted to welcome you inside or out. In addition every Saturday during the summer period you can eat in a festive atmosphere thanks to the excellent music events organised by the town.
N.B. In July and August the little train will take you for a visit around the town free of charge.
CANNES
In the 19th century Cannes was still a very modest place and although Napoleon disembarked in the Bay of Cannes in 1815 on his return from exile on the island of Elba, it was paradoxically an Englishman, Lord Brougham, who made Cannes’ fortune.
In 1834, Lord Brougham, Lord Chancellor in the Court of England, was on his way to Italy where he was taking his daughter to treat her weak lungs. He was stopped at the gateway to Nice. A cholera epidemic had started in Italy and the Sardinian authorities had closed the border. He then decided to go back to Grasse, at the time the largest town in the region. But night fell and he finally spent the night in Cannes, in the village’s only inn run by Master Pinchinat.
The following day Lord Brougham was attracted by the quality of the light there, the beauty of the gulf, the extraordinary view over the green Lérins Islands and… the excellent bouillabaisse made by the master of the house. He stayed and spent the last 34 years of his life in Cannes, which he made a very aristocratic English colony. In their turn the most illustrious houses in European high society wasted no time enjoying this new winter resort.
The port was developed for yachts, palaces sprouted up and the legend was well on its way.
The two Lérins islands, both with prestigious pasts, lie in the famous Bay of Cannes: Île Sainte-Marguerite and its fort – it is said - housed the famous man in the iron mask as well as many political prisoners from the 17th century, and Île Saint-Honorat.

In autumn 1938 the idea for an international film festival was taking shape in France. At the time, people were divided on the question, especially since storm clouds were gathering over Europe. In the end the government charged the Association Française de l'Action Artistique with organising the event. Biarritz and Cannes were both in the running but Cannes just snatched it, having fought tooth and nail.
The first international film festival was held in 1946 and since then it could be said that Cannes has become the world capital of cinematographic art.
