Visit Paris from your hotel Eiffel Capitol Tour Eiffel In 1889, when the Eiffel Tower was completed, it was the tallest building in the world at 300m. Initially built as a temporary structure to celebrate the centenary of the Revolution and the 1889 Exhibition it was due for demolition immediately after. Since then this steel structure, which defies architectural rules, has become the symbol of Paris. In the 1920's it was also the radio and telegraphy transmitter, and is now the radio and TV transmitter for Paris and its region. The 12,000 steel girders are held together by 2,500,000 rivets and it has three viewing platforms: the 1st at 57m, the second at 115m, the third at 276m. The top of the antenna is 320m from the ground. From the 3rd platform you can see Paris and its suburbs, and on a clear day you can see Chartres Cathedral.
